I just LOVE Japanese bands who try and write English - what the hell does 'The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety' even mean?! Regardless of the ridiculous title, this is actually a phenomenal album - primo Japanese post-rock at its very best. Enjoy.
I've just returned home following a three-day bender visiting friends - hence why there were no posts Friday-Sunday - and haven't had time to do a Monday Mixtape for this week's theme. This mixtape will more than suffice, but be warned, it is extremely offensive - J-Zone has collected and expertly mixed the very best examples of the very worst type of rap - this is anti-women and pro-violence, littered with naughty words and tales of sexual antics; see past that and you'll find this a very enjoyable album. Enjoy.
Another gem from Chev's collection, and one which, when I first heard it, I couldn't stop listening to for weeks. This is just utterly brilliant post-hardcore - if you liked the Les Savy Fav I posted a few weeks back, then this is for you, and even if you didn't, this is a highly accessible album - and I can't really say anymore than that other than:
...and something different again. Do we have four skinny blokes? No, we have but one. Tom Vek is a self-taught London-based multi-instrumental (wow, hyphen overload!) who wrote, produced, and played all the instruments on his 2005 debut. He's also something of a mystery - his website has said he has been "working on new material" ever since the album came out, but not a peep has been heard yet. Hmm. Anyways, props to my main man Ally B for hitting me up with this sweet album all those years ago. It's just guitars with an electronic undercurrent, and some classic drums. Simple yet highly effective. Enjoy.
The past few weeks have seen releases from a CYHSY side project, as well as a solo effort from frontman Alec Ounsworth, but neither compare to this album, which was self-released back in 2005. In fact, even CYHSY have yet to produce anything half as good as their debut. I'm listening to this album properly for the first time in a long while, and it still hasn't lost it's immediate impact to astound and amaze. Ounsworth's vocals - he slurs like a drunk stroke victim throughout the album - add to CYSHY's unique sound, and the cherry on top of this tasty little cake is 'The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth' which is, dare I suggest it, perfect.
